 About this event

Canberra Young Professionals are proud to announce our first speaker event with The Green Shed co-founder Sandie Parkes!

The Green Shed is a genuine Canberra icon and truly plays a critical role in our local community. Through their aim to lessen the amount of waste ending up in landfill and support locals, the Green Shed attracts more than 20,000 visitors per week and has been able to donate over one million dollars to the local community! They also support a number of schools and local organisations by providing supplies, equipment or furniture.

Whether you’re looking for tips on how she grew a business from scratch to over 70 employees and three separate locations (Mugga Lane, Mitchell and Civic), tips on sustainability, or are just hoping to meet the face behind one of Canberra’s biggest icons - this is not a night you want to miss!

More about Sandie Parkes:

Sandy is a co-founder of The Green Shed which manages the Reuse contracts at both Resource Management Centres in the ACT. She has worked in and around the sector for over 30 years and aims to promote reuse as the first option in both domestic and commercial waste management. For many years The Green Shed has adopted a circular economy perspective when striving to lessen the amounts of waste sent to landfill and they have engaged the local community in this journey. Reuse is so often identified with the charity sector yet The Green Shed operates as a viable business attracting around 20,000 visitors each week and employing over 70 local people. Sandie is keen to share her experiences with others and demonstrate how our model here in the ACT is a proven concept that could easily be replicated in other municipalities.
